Introductory Rug Hooking 101 – 2 hours
Introductory Rug Hooking takes the student through the beginning steps of rug hooking. It is an opportunity to try rug hooking to see if you like it and want to pursue it further. In the class we start to hook a small 6″ square star. The student chooses two of three color packets: green, red, and yellow. One packet is for the star and the other for the background.
In this course the student will try different hoops or stands, as well as different hooks. Students will also learn about different backings. They will learn how to hook with different fibres – both yarns and fabrics – and learn where to find them and how to prepare them for hooking. The student will learn a bit of the history of rug hooking and will focus on techniques for creating a straight line, diagonal lines, and points. Information will be given on how to finish their piece and prepare it for use. Handouts include: a list of suppliers, a list of YouTube videos and rug hookers to google on the Internet, a short history of rug hooking, and class notes.
Students are asked to come about 15 minutes early to get all the payment details out of the way before class begins. Class costs $100 for lessons and kit. The kit includes the pattern on primitive linen backing and two fibre packages. Hook and hoop are an extra $50CAD. For the duration of the class the student may borrow equipment from me. However, if you wish to finish your piece after class, you will have to buy a hoop or frame, and a hook. You are not obligated to buy either from me.

Curves Class 102 – 2 hours
The Curves class is the second in the series of introductory rug hooking classes I teach. In it the student learns how to hook curves, circles, backgrounds, and lettering. Included in the class are handouts of the class notes and a handout on different types of background hooking. The lettering in this piece can be modified to any word or words that can fit across the bottom.
The class costs $105CAD and includes the kit cost. The kit consists of the pattern on backing and a fibre kit for hooking. Colors in the kit may not be exactly as shown, but will be in the same color families. Please come 15 minutes early to pay for the class before it starts.
Students are expected to provide their own hoop/frame, hook, and scissors for this class. Those without may want to contact me a couple of week’s previous to the class to purchase them.
From Start to Finish Class 103 – 8 hours
The From Start to Finish class takes the student from idea generation through to hanging a piece on the wall, or preparing it for a flat surface. In it the student will come up with their own idea, develop a design, put it on backing, color plan it, and hook it. The class takes place over four weeks, with 2 hours of instruction each week. This should give ample time for the student to finish a small to medium sized piece. The student will not only learn to hook the piece, but how to finish it, label it, photograph it, record it, and hang it. The student will also learn about famous rug hookers and different types of rug hooking.
Students will be responsible for the class cost and for all the supplies and equipment they need. Expect a design to cost about 75 cents per square inch. A cutter will be available for use during class.
Class cost is $300CAD for 8 hours of lessons.
Finishing Class 104 – 2 hours
There are many ways to finish a hooked piece. The Finishing Class will cover three common finishes in rug hooking: the folded and mitred edge, the whipped edge, and the herringbone whipped edge. All three edges are suitable for finishing rugs. Some are more suited to certain purposes than others. Take this class and find out more about finishing edges! 🙂
Class cost is $100CAD, plus $20 for supplies for samples. If you have your own projects to finish, and bring the proper supplies, the supply fee will be waived.
